The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation is launching a $2.5 million initiative to advance understanding of how oral and systemic health interconnect. Named after founding donors Patty and Dr. Paul Levi and Dr. Colin Richman, the program will sponsor interdisciplinary research, education for healthcare professionals, and advocacy efforts.

The initiative encompasses several components: new research grants focusing on oral-systemic connections, expanded Patty and Paul Levi Research Awards (now including postdoctoral periodontal residents), education programs for dentists and physicians, and funding for American Academy of Periodontology programs including a consensus on preventing peri-implant diseases.

International collaboration with the Sepa Foundation will include a biannual online symposium beginning in 2027, expansion of the PerioDash 5K run/walk to Europe, and educational webinars aligned with health awareness events.

Dr. Paul Levi emphasized the goal to “put the mouth back in the body,” noting that mounting evidence demonstrates correlations between periodontal disease and conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Mia Geisinger, Immediate Past-President of the American Academy of Periodontology, noted that while associations exist, “enhanced medical-dental integration” through electronic health records could improve outcomes.

The foundation has committed $2 million in contributions, with Dr. Richman pledging $1 million and the Levis providing additional funding plus an estate commitment. The AAP Foundation seeks an additional $500,000 to extend the five-year initiative further.
