McGuire Program for Clinician Scientists

 
The McGuire Program for Clinician Scientists provides introductory training and mentorship for established periodontal private practicioners interested in establishing high-level research programs in their clinics.

The program will begin with an intensive seminar: a two-and-a-half-day immersion and principal entry point into the clinician-scientist development pathway. Its purpose is not to make someone a researcher in two days, but to answer a more fundamental question: What does excellent practice-based research really look like and how can it be successfully accomplished in the midst of a busy private practice? Seminar participants will then have the option to apply for a second stage of training, the Michael K. McGuire Practice-Based Research Fellowship, a defined, year-long pathway designed to develop practicing periodontists into thoughtful clinician scientists, investigators, collaborative leaders, mentors, and lifelong stewards of evidence-based practice.

Eligibility

Open to AAP members operating private practices in the U.S. for at least five years. Six to eight applicants will be selected annually for the Intensive Seminar, from which two to four will be accepted to the Fellowship.

AAP members in private practice in the United States are elgibile to apply for the Intensive Seminar. Previous Intensive Seminar participants may then apply for the Michael K. McGuire Fellowship in Practice-Based Research. Immediate family members of the AAP Foundation Board of Directors, officers, and selection committee members are not eligible to apply.

Application and Selection Procedure

An award committee selects up to ten participants each year for the Intensive Seminar on Practice-Based Research, and up to five Michael K. McGuire Fellows from among previous Intensive Seminar participants.

    Travel, housing, and other costs for the Intensive Seminar on Practice-Based Research are provided by the Foundation. Fellows receive a $1,000 stipend to defray travel and housing costs.

The AAP Foundation is grateful to the many donors who made this program possible including Dr. Michael K. McGuire and his patients at Perio Health Professionals in Houston, TX.

McGuire is the founder of the McGuire Institute (iMc), a network of master clinicians trained and qualified to conduct high level clinical research in a practice-based setting and located strategically throughout the United States. McGuire Institute network members will be among the faculty for the Intensive Seminar and will host site visits by McGuire Fellows. Dr. McGuire and his partner, Dr. E. Todd Scheyer, have successfully conducted several landmark clinical studies in their practice and for almost two decades have earned a reputation for being valued research partners who provide timely, ethical, and high-quality results.
